March 2022 Philanthropy Update

Financial gifts support blood collection.

San Diego Blood Bank Foundation is grateful for our partnership with the community to support San Diego Blood Bank’s Collection and Distribution Program of lifesaving blood products.

This month, Team SDBB continues their training for the San Diego Half Marathon on March 27. We are excited to show our appreciation for the team and hope you will join us on marathon day to cheer them on! If you would like to support the team in their goal to raise funds for our new donation location opening soon in Chula Vista, please visit sandiegobloodbank.org/teamsdbb.

We are also looking forward to the upcoming fundraiser by the San Diego Sockers on April 3rd and on April 4th, San Diego County’s 38th Annual Blood and Marrow Registry Drive. See below for more information on both of these events, including how to participate.

March is National Nutrition Month, highlighting the importance of a healthy diet and St. Patrick’s Day is coming up on March 17th. We hope everyone has a safe and fun day celebrating all things Irish!

Your financial support of SDBB enables us to expand our reach in the community, making it easier and more convenient for people to donate blood. Increased blood collections help ensure a robust supply for patients in need. We are grateful for your continued partnership and commitment to our mission – Saving Lives Today, Improving Lives Tomorrow.

With gratitude,

Team SDBB in Training for the San Diego Half Marathon

March 27, 2022

The San Diego Half Marathon is almost here and Team SDBB is logging training miles and fundraising along the way!

Last month sixteen participants came together to kick off our time as Team SDBB through an outdoor yoga class and a small reception held at the Liberty Station Donor Center. A blood recipient shared her story as a survivor, reminding everyone of the importance of their participation and fundraising for San Diego Blood Bank.

So far, we have raised over $5,500 toward our goal, but we still need your support. If you are interested in supporting Team SDBB with a financial gift, please visit sandiegobloodbank.org/teamsdbb

Financial donations raised through Team SDBB will help purchase equipment and supplies for the new donation location in Chula Vista at Terra Nova Plaza opening soon.

Team SDBB Participants will be walking and running toward the finish line on Sunday, March 27th. Come out and cheer us on and look for our special San Diego Blood Bank Team SDBB jerseys along the race course!

special thanks

We are happy to announce that the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation has approved a $100,000 grant to help fund 21 new Trima Accel® Blood Collection Systems in support of SDBB’s Blood Collection Program. Trima Systems separate whole blood donations into three components – red blood cells, plasma, and platelets to ensure we meet the daily blood supply needs of our hospital partners. These systems will be utilized at all SDBB donor centers and bloodmobiles.

Since 2011, the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation has generously donated $1,363,465 to fund state-of-the-art blood collection resources such as bloodmobiles, Trima Systems, cord blood technology, and transportation vehicles to save thousands of lives every year.

San Diego Blood Bank is grateful for the Walter J. and Betty C. Zable Foundation’s lifesaving partnership!

meet Team Survivor Waylon

Shortly after birth, Waylon was diagnosed with severe respiratory distress. The following 13 weeks he had two surgeries and a total of 50 blood transfusions. Waylon was on oxygen for a year and a half and started walking at 2 ½ years old. He is doing great now, he loves music, arts and crafts, riding his bike and playing with his cars/trains. Most of all he loves hanging out with his big brother!

happy St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2022

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast–on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

The day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish (and those that want to be) around the world, especially in Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. To learn more about the history of St. Patrick’s Day, visit History.com and don’t forget to wear green on March 17!
