February 2022 Philanthropy Update
We are excited to share the news that San Diego Blood Bank recently celebrated the Grand Opening of San Diego Blood Bank’s (SDBB) first permanent donation location in Orange County. Operating under the name Southern California Blood Bank (So Cal Blood Bank), the Irvine Business District Donation Location will collect hundreds of units of blood every month, potentially impacting thousands of lives in this community while giving a necessary boost to the local blood supply.
Thanks to the generous support of individual financial donors and corporate sponsors the Irvine location is fully equipped with vital resources such as Trima blood collection systems, HemoFlow devices, and blood collection supplies. Your support enables SDBB to expand our reach across the region and work to provide a robust blood supply to our community. Our expansion also includes a new, permanent donation location in Chula Vista at Terra Nova Plaza, scheduled to open this spring.
Also, Team SDBB is busy training for the San Diego Half Marathon, 10K and 5K race on March 27, 2022, and fundraising to help purchase equipment and supplies for our new donation locations. There are a few spots left on the team - see below for more information on how to join.
Last but not least, February is American Heart Month and from Saturday, February 12 – Sunday, February 20, San Diego Blood Bank will once again be participating in the County of San Diego’s Love Your Heart campaign. Love Your Heart is an annual event in which organizations from across the U.S. and Mexico join together to provide FREE blood pressure screenings to the public. All of San Diego Blood Bank’s donation locations will serve as a site to offer free blood pressure screenings to the public (no blood donation necessary). Learn more at LoveYourHeartSD.org.
We look forward to continuing to partner with our individual financial donors, corporate partners and generous foundations to impact the lives of so many patients like Ella (featured above), who requires regular blood transfusions to stay healthy.
We are truly grateful for your financial support.
With gratitude,
Sherry Serio
Vice President of Development

special thanks
San Diego Blood Bank Foundation would like to thank Grossmont Healthcare District for their $30,000 gift to support the purchase of 10 new HemoFlow 400XS devices for our East County Donor Center. Every year, SDBB distributes over 150,000 blood units throughout the region. By implementing the new model, we have the capability to increase our blood collections by up to 10%, allowing us to provide blood to nearly 16,000 additional patients in need. Many thanks to GHD and their 22 years of community partnership!
meet Team Survivor makai
Makai was born 15 weeks premature at a mere 1 Pound 8 oz and had low hemoglobin levels. He was required to have multiple lifesaving blood transfusions at Sharp Mary Birch NICU from blood donated by the SDBB.
Makai’s mother wishes she could personally thank the people who donated the blood that saved her baby's life and encourages everyone to donate blood to save a life like Makai.
