April 2022 Philanthropy Update

Financial gifts support blood collection for patients like Aidan, who received multiple plasma units to fight an infection after brain surgery.

San Diego Blood Bank is celebrating many milestones this spring. We are thrilled to announce that The Conrad Prebys Foundation will help bring greater precision to transfusion medicine through their generous grant in support of our Precision Blood program. We are so grateful for their partnership and dedication to the health of our community. Through philanthropy we advance health! Please see below for more information about this impactful grant.

San Diego Blood Bank Foundation is also celebrating and congratulating Team SDBB for successfully completing their races in the San Diego Half Marathon on March 27th. Team SDBB raised over $9,000 to fund equipment and supplies for the new donation location opening in Chula Vista in May. Thank you to Team SDBB for your commitment and thank you to everyone who supported the team's training and fundraising efforts!

This month we are also celebrating our volunteers during National Volunteer Month and National Volunteer Appreciation Week April 17-23. From serving snacks to blood donors in the canteen to helping at blood drives and events, they donate their precious time to help support our lifesaving mission and we are grateful.

Your financial support of SDBB supports blood collection and distribution of lifesaving blood products, helping to ensure a robust supply to our community. We are grateful for your continued partnership and commitment to our mission – Saving Lives Today, Improving Lives Tomorrow.

With gratitude,

San Diego blood bank Receives $725,825 Grant

from The Conrad Prebys Foundation

We are thrilled to announce that The Conrad Prebys Foundation recently awarded a $725,825 grant in support of San Diego Blood Bank’s Precision Blood Program. We are honored to partner with The Conrad Prebys Foundation again this year to advance the health of the most vulnerable patients in need of blood to survive.

The Conrad Prebys Foundation's grant will:

  • Provide cutting-edge technology to bring greater precision to transfusion medicine through a targeted DNA sequencing assay and analysis of blood type in both the blood donors and the blood transfusion recipients to ensure more precisely matched transfusions.

  • Significantly increase SDBB’s capacity to rapidly test blood donors and transfusion patient blood samples – creating rapid automation, efficiency, and build a robust  precision blood inventory.

  • Expand SDBB’s inventory of rare blood and support patients that are most likely to require multiple transfusions throughout the course of their lives.

  • Allow physicians to identify more accurately the best transfusion products for their patients, resulting in fewer complications and immune reactions, and better patient outcomes.

Making blood products safer via this patient-centric approach will usher in an era of precision transfusion medicine. Transfusion patients in greatest need include cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, organ and marrow transplant patients, and patients with blood disorders like sickle cell disease or thalassemia or other clinical conditions requiring frequent transfusions.

Together, we impact and save lives and advance health. Thank you, The Conrad Prebys Foundation, for your unwavering dedication and commitment to improve the quality of life for our community. We are grateful to honor Conrad Prebys’ legacy of philanthropy!

special thanks

MoneyTree, Inc. has been supporting San Diego Blood Bank for 16 years and has donated over $120,000 in support of our mission. This year, MoneyTree has made a generous gift of $5,000 in support of our new Chula Vista Donation Center that will help fund the critical blood collection resources needed at this new location. On behalf of the patients and families we serve, thank you, Moneytree, for your generosity and continuous support.

Thank you to the San Diego County Employees Charitable Organization (CECO) for a $3,051 grant to fund a HemoFlow 400XS blood collection system. HemoFlows have an important job of improving blood collection efficiency. Whole blood donors can see a HemoFlow in action during donation—it’s the machine that cradles the blood bag, moving it side to side. Sometimes it beeps to alert staff to check on the donor and that the donation is smooth and successful.

Many thanks to CECO for partnering with San Diego Blood Bank and providing your community blood bank’s blood collection program with vital technology and resources. Together, we impact life!

meet Team Survivor charlene

Charlene Waddell was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which metastasized to her liver and she needed multiple blood transfusions as part of her treatment. She is now healthy and encourages everyone who can to donate blood.

“I’d like to give a personal thank you to all of the financial donors. I am really living my best life. Half the time I was not expected to live. Without your financial support, I mean, I may not have survived.” - Charlene

San Diego Blood Bank recognizes National Volunteer Week 2022 (April 17-23) which brings awareness to the contributions of volunteers and encourages others to donate their time to worthy causes. National volunteer week began in 1974 and is organized and promoted by Points of Light at www.pointsoflight.org.

All year long SDBB relies on the generosity of volunteers to help us coordinate donors at mobile drives, attend to donors in our canteens, assist us at special events and provide support wherever needed.

In 2021 San Diego Blood Bank had over 400 active volunteers that contributed over 18,500 hours. We could not do what we do without volunteers and thank them for their time and talents!
