July/August 2024 Philanthropy Update

SDBB volunteer and blood recipient Joy at last year’s Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive.

Dear Friend,

I am delighted to share the San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) July/August Philanthropy update, highlighting the significant impact of our financial supporters. Your generosity and dedication to our mission enables us to save lives and promote health. Thank you for your ongoing partnership.

During the summer, the blood supply nationwide tends to drop, but the need for blood does not decline. Hospitals still require blood for transfusions to treat serious injuries, surgeries, and many other conditions and situations. To boost the local blood supply, SDBB is partnering with Comic-Con International for the Comic-Con 48th Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive during SD Comic-Con.  To those who plan to donate blood, we look forward to seeing you there!

As you know, SDBB operates 24/7/365 to provide lifesaving blood to 34 hospitals throughout Southern California. Your financial support of the Blood Collection Program helps ensure we have the necessary resources to continue our efforts at our nine donor centers throughout San Diego County and on our fleet of 10 bloodmobiles.

To better serve our community of blood donors and to build a robust blood supply, we are raising important funds to support SDBB’s expansion into Clairemont Mesa. The new Clairemont Mesa Donor Center is scheduled to open in October 2024. Please consider supporting your local center today with your financial gift.

We look forward to our continued partnerships that impact the lives of so many patients.

Thank you for your financial support.

With gratitude,

New Donation Location in clairemont mesa at clairemont town Square

Partner with SDBB to save lives in San Diego. Our local donor centers welcome nearly 60,000 volunteer blood donors each year. To meet growing demands, SDBB is expanding its impact in the community through the addition of a new donor center located in Clairemont Mesa at Clairemont Town Square.

Blood collected by SDBB helps those with critical medical needs, from cancer to trauma. Altogether, our donor centers are responsible for collecting 50 percent of our vital blood supply. In response to community needs, and for blood donors to have access to physical donor centers, SDBB has opened a temporary site in Clairemont Mesa.

SDBB is seeking individual, corporate, and foundation support to fund critical supplies and equipment to ensure the new location is fully equipped when the doors to the permanent site open this October.

For more information, please contact
Cherryl Castro-Lector, Director of Development, at cclector@sdbb.org or (619) 400-8214.

Thanks to our newest Clairemont Mesa Donor location Corporate Sponsor

Thank you to Antibody Design Laboratories. Their generous donation to San Diego Blood Bank will help support the opening of our new, permanent donation center in Clairemont Mesa.

community partnership

Funding from our long-time partner, San Diego Gas & Electric, has enabled SDBB to continue our AlertMedia emergency communications system. The system allows SDBB to send emergency notifications when critical events, such as severe weather or workplace violence, threaten the health and safety of staff, volunteers, and donors.

SDBB ensures timely delivery of blood products to numerous hospital partners. Our staff must be aware of emergencies that could negatively impact this critical service.

Many thanks to San Diego Gas & Electric for its continued support!

Meet team survivor emma

Emma was born with an undeveloped right ventricle and was diagnosed with hypoplastic right heart with pulmonary atresia. She had her first heart surgery at 3 days old, her second at 4 months old, and then, her third at 19 months old. San Diego Blood Bank supported Emma through all of these surgeries. She now has annual check-ups with her cardiologist, but is doing well. Emma loves baking and cooking for her friends. She enjoys reading, listening to music and podcasts.

Emma also loves to volunteer each year as a camp counselor for Camp del Corazon, a summer camp for kids born with a congenital heart defect. Emma attended the camp from ages 7-17 and now loves being a camp counselor on Catalina Island.

San Diego Blood Bank would like to express their gratitude to the David C. Copley Foundation for their recent grant to support our Precision Blood™ program.

Precision Blood™ is an innovative approach that brings greater precision to transfusion medicine through state-of-the-art genotyping technology. We are expanding our inventory of rare blood to help us more accurately match blood types in donors and blood recipients, resulting in fewer complications. We have proven the concept that we can find rare blood types and better match them to potential blood recipients.

Continued support from the Copley Foundation has allowed SDBB to move on to Phase Two of the program to demonstrate this on a larger scale, conduct clinical trials, and improve the standard of care in transfusion medicine.

For more information about Precision Blood™ and how you can support this important program, contact Cherryl Castro-Lector, Director of Development, at cclector@sdbb.org or (619) 400-8214

August 1 is World Lung Cancer day

World Lung Cancer Day is observed on August 1st of each year. This global observance is recognized as a day to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and highlight the importance of research and early detection.

According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer screenings help detect cancer before you have any symptoms, which can promote early detection and reduce lung cancer deaths worldwide.

For more information on Lung Cancer Screening Resources, click here.

Corporate Partnership Opportunities

SDBB is grateful to our corporate partners who are passionate about saving and improving the lives of the patients we serve. They host blood drives, their employees volunteer and give blood, and they give financially to help support our greatest needs, such as bloodmobiles, lab equipment, blood collection supplies, and research.

We work with companies and organizations to create mutually beneficial partnership opportunities, and there are many ways to support our work, including:

  • Making a corporate gift to support a specific need

  • Sponsoring an event such as our Connect to Life stewardship and community event

  • Helping to fund programs like the High School Blood Drive Challenge

  • Encouraging employee volunteerism

  • Making a gift in honor of employee volunteer hours

  • Providing a matching gift for a fundraising campaign

  • Conducting a point-of-sale or cash register round-up campaign

  • Fundraise for SDBB by hosting a donor reception, golf tournament, or other special event

SDBB recognizes our corporate partners throughout the year in various digital and print channels, on our donor center digital displays (in six of our donor centers), and on our bloodmobiles!

For more information about corporate partnerships, please contact Director of Development Cherryl Castro-Lector at cclector@sdbb.org or (619) 400-8214.

Planned Giving

Philanthropy is personal, and every donor has a unique “why” they give. There are many ways to make a planned gift such as stock, real estate, life insurance, will or living trust, charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, and charitable lead trust. SDBB also has an endowment at San Diego Foundation, and we welcome gifts to fund # 4727 (please include the fund number on your check).

For more information about how to contribute to SDBB’s endowment or create your legacy through planned giving to SDBB, please contact Cherryl Castro-Lector, Director of Development, at cclector@sdbb.org or (619) 400-8214.
