January/February 2024 Philanthropy Update
Dear Friend,
Happy New Year from San Diego Blood Bank! We are grateful for our financial supporters, blood donors, and community partners for coming together to help us successfully fulfill our mission of saving lives in the community.
In 2023, 619 donors contributed $1,057,132 to fund critical blood collection equipment and supplies. Know that your contribution played a critical role in providing lifesaving resources that give the gift of life to thousands of patients each year. Thank you for saving lives with us!
The New Year brings new opportunities to further our mission in 2024. As the need for blood continues to increase, so does the need to expand our reach and to continue providing a robust blood supply for our community.
Our new Clairemont Mesa donation center, currently operating as a temporary site, will open as a permanent location in Fall 2024. Altogether, our donor centers are responsible for collecting 50% of our vital blood supply. Blood collected at the new donation center will assist with the increasing demand for blood resources and help save patients’ lives throughout the Southern California region.
On behalf of San Diego Blood Bank, we wish everyone a safe and healthy New Year. I look forward to sharing inspiring stories of impact with you all year long.
With gratitude,
Cherryl Castro-Lector

New Donation Location in clairemont mesa at clairemont town Square
Partner with SDBB to save lives in San Diego. Our local donor centers welcome nearly 60,000 volunteer blood donors each year and to meet growing demands, SDBB is expanding its impact in the community through the addition of a new donation location located in Clairemont Mesa at Clairemont Town Square.
Blood collected by SDBB helps those with critical medical needs, from cancer to trauma. Altogether, our donor centers are responsible for collecting 50 percent of our vital blood supply. In response to community needs, and for blood donors to have access to physical donor centers, SDBB has opened a temporary site in Clairemont Mesa.
SDBB is seeking individual, corporate, and foundation support to fund critical supplies and equipment to ensure the new location is fully equipped when the doors to the permanent site open this Fall.

Padres Winter Blood Drive
January 23, 9:00 aM to 4:00 pM
San Diego Blood Bank and San Diego Padres are teaming up to save lives during National Blood Donor Month with their annual Padres Winter Blood Drive on January 23, 2024, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Lexus Premier parking lot (corner of Park Blvd and Imperial Avenue), across from Petco Park.
National Blood Donor Month honors blood donors and highlights the need for blood and platelet donations during winter—one of the most difficult times of the year to collect enough blood for hospital patients.
All blood donors who donate at this one-day blood drive will receive a limited-edition Padres Winter Blood Drive T-shirt (while supplies last) and free parking in the Lexus Premier parking lot, located at the corner of Park Boulevard and Imperial Avenue.
San Diego Padres have partnered with San Diego Blood Bank in support of community health by hosting seven consecutive years of summer blood drives. Since 2017, the San Diego Padres have helped collect more than 3,000 pints of blood that supported thousands of patients in Southern California hospitals.
To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in general good health. Eligible blood donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment at sandiegobloodbank.org or calling 619-400-8251.

San Diego Blood Bank is Celebrating national blood donor month
San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB), the local blood bank serving San Diego County, is celebrating National Blood Donor Month throughout the month of January by honoring blood donors who regularly roll up their sleeves and help save lives and inviting those who have never donated before.
National Blood Donor Month has been observed since January 1970 with the goal of increasing blood and platelet donations during winter - one of the most difficult times of year to collect enough blood products to meet patient needs. Right now, there is an urgent need of blood donations, as San Diego’s blood supply is critically low and SDBB is experiencing supply chain challenges.
Every two seconds in America, someone needs blood, and one in seven patients entering a hospital require blood transfusions. This ranges from trauma victims to patients battling sickle cell disease or Thalassemia, or to ensure a successful organ or bone marrow transplant. Cancer patients use 25 percent of all blood donations, and blood transfusions are needed in one out of every 83 newborn deliveries in American today. One blood donation could save up to three lives.
“Blood is unique in our healthcare system,” said Doug Morton, San Diego Blood Bank CEO. “There is not substitute, and it cannot be synthetically made so volunteer blood donations are the only way to provide blood to hospitals in need.”
More information about National Blood Donor Month can be found at sandiegobloodbank.org/nbdm. To be eligible to donate you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds and be in general good health.
Appointments are encouraged and available by visiting sandiegobloodbank.org or (619) 400-8251. Walk-ins are welcome.

February is American Heart Month
American Heart Month is a time when all people can focus on their cardiovascular health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions. In the United States, the most common type of heart disease is Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), which can lead to a heart attack. You can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease through lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medicine.
Your can do a lot to protect your heart. Learn more about heart-health living.
Prioritizing your health can help you avoid severe illness. People with poor cardiovascular health are also at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Learn how COVID-19 affects your heart.
Self-care is heart-health care. Practicing self-care can keep our hearts healthy. Being physically active, eating healthier foods, getting enough sleep, not smoking, and finding healthy ways to reduce stress can help prevent heart disease. And, when we take care of our hearts, we set an example for those around us to do the same.
Get to know #OurHearts! Learn what a healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and blood sugar level is for you and how they impact your risk for heart disease. Having a basic understanding of information that concerns your health and using the information to inform health-related decisions for yourself and others, is strongly linked to better health.

Meet team survivor BRaden
Born at Pomerado Hospital in Poway, Braden experienced low platelet count at birth and could not stop bleeding. After his body rejected the blood from his family, it was his mother's blood and the donations from San Diego Blood Bank that saved his life.
Without the donations, Braden's life would be much different. He is now thriving in San Diego working in sports media doing what he loves.
Corporate Partnership Opportunities
SDBB is grateful to our corporate partners who are passionate about saving and improving the lives of the patients we serve. They host blood drives, their employees volunteer and give blood, and they give financially to help support our greatest needs such as a new bloodmobile, lab equipment, blood collection supplies, and research.
We work with companies and organizations to create mutually beneficial partnership opportunities, and there are many ways to support our work, including:
Making a corporate gift to support a specific need
Sponsoring an event such as our Connect to Life receptions
Helping to fund programs like Precision Blood™ or the High School Blood Drive Challenge
Encouraging employee volunteerism
Making a gift in honor of employee volunteer hours
Providing a matching gift for a fundraising campaign
Conducting a point-of-sale or cash register round-up campaign
Fundraising for SDBB by hosting a gala, golf tournament, auction, run/walk, or other event that raises funds to benefit our mission
SDBB recognizes our corporate partners throughout the year in various digital and print channels, on our donor center digital displays (in six of our donor centers), and on our bloodmobiles!
