January 2022 Philanthropy Update

Blood recipient Charlene

The New Year brings new opportunities to further our mission and in 2022, San Diego Blood Bank is expanding our reach in the community. Our new Irvine Business District location in Orange County (operating as Southern California Blood Bank, a division of SDBB) started to accept blood donors this month. And this Spring, a new, permanent donation location in Chula Vista at Terra Nova Plaza will open to serve South San Diego.

These new donation locations will allow us to expand our reach across the region and work to provide a robust blood supply to our community. Our Irvine Business District donation location is expected to collect more than 6,000 blood donations annually, and Chula Vista’s location aims to collect approximately 4,800 units of blood each year. These locations will increase the blood supply and help save thousands of patients in the Southern California region.

In addition to our expansion, SDBB Foundation is happy to announce “Team SDBB”, a fundraising initiative to help build a new community of financial donors. Team SDBB will be running or walking in the San Diego Half Marathon, 10K or 5K race on March 27, 2022 and fundraising in support of our lifesaving mission. We are so excited to get to know and train with our supporters and raise funds to help purchase equipment and supplies for our new donation locations. See below for more information on how to join Team SDBB!

In 2021, 609 donors contributed $911,935 to fund critical blood collection equipment and supplies that enabled us to fully equip our new Liberty Station Donor Center. San Diego Blood Bank is grateful to all of the financial donors who supported our lifesaving mission in 2021! Thank you!

We look forward to continuing to partner with our individual financial donors, corporate partners and generous foundations to impact the lives of so many.

As we recognize Nation Blood Donor month, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring blood is on the shelves for patients like Charlene, shown above, who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and needed multiple blood transfusions as part of her treatment.

We are truly grateful for your financial support and wish you a very Happy New Year!

With gratitude,

Waylon was born in April 2012, and shortly after birth was diagnosed with severe respiratory distress. The following 13 weeks he had two surgeries and a total of 50 blood transfusions. Waylon was on oxygen for a year and a half and started walking at 2 ½ years old. He is doing great now, he loves music, arts and crafts, riding his bike and playing with his cars/trains. Most of all he loves hanging out with his big brother!

SDBB’s blood collection program relies on financial support in addition to volunteer blood donors to ensure blood is on the shelves when local patients need it most. You can support blood collections by making a financial gift and donating blood at a blood drive or one of 8 county locations.

Celebrate National Blood Donor Month By Saving Lives With Us

January is National Blood Donor Month, and this year San Diego Blood Bank, Southern California Blood Bank and blood centers across the country are encouraging healthy and eligible individuals to commit to donating blood at least twice throughout 2022! Winter is a difficult time when blood collection centers work extra hard to collect enough blood to maintain a safe and steady supply for our hospital partners 24/7. We are ready to welcome new and returning lifesavers to the San Diego Blood Bank family.

Join us in celebrating National Blood Donor Month. Throughout the month you can check out our social media accounts for facts and tips on how to maintain your health and help others by donating blood.

We want to take the time to also show our immense gratitude to SDBB's elite group of blood donors, the Guardians Circle, whose members commit to donate within 8 weeks of their eligibility date, ensuring that blood is on the shelves for those in need. You can make the pledge and learn more about this program at sandiegobloodbank.org/guardianscircle.

CARS is committed to treating every vehicle donor with gratitude and great service while delivering the highest possible returns to our partners. To date, CARS has returned more than $300 million to their nonprofit partners because of vehicles donors.
