November/December 2021 Philanthropy Update
As we celebrate this holiday season, San Diego Blood Bank has much to be thankful for. Our generous community of financial donors have helped us through challenging times and ensured we could continue to provide lifesaving blood to patients in need.
Financial donors play an integral role in our mission to ensure critical resources are available to collect, process, and distribute lifesaving blood to our community. This past year, your financial support was vital to our lifesaving efforts as we raised funds for equipment such as Trima apheresis devices and HemoFlow blood flow monitors that enable us to collect blood, plasma, and platelets more efficiently. Your support also enabled us to fully equip our newest donation location in Point Loma at Liberty Station.
You also helped to provide for an emergency communications system for SDBB staff and donors on site, two new environmentally-friendly electric vehicles to support SDBB’s daily operational needs, and last but not least, two new state-of-the-art bloodmobiles — impacting up to 21,000 lives each year. For more information about the impact of your gift, click HERE to read our 2020/2021 Impact Report.
We are truly grateful for your financial support and wish you a safe and joyous holiday and a very Happy New Year!
With gratitude,
Sherry Serio

Donate Your Unwanted Car, Truck, Motorcycle, RV or Boat to SDBB!
The holiday season is a great time to donate an unused or car, truck, motorcycle, RV or boat and you can support SDBB at the same time!
SDBB is partnering with Charitable Adult Rides and Services (CARS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit social enterprise owned by a nonprofit and supporting only nonprofits through vehicle donations. CARS takes care of everything from the pick-up and sale to sending you the donation receipt and necessary tax documents. CARS is committed to treating every vehicle donor with gratitude and great service while delivering the highest possible returns to our partners. To date, CARS has returned more than $300 million to their nonprofit partners because of vehicles donors.
Simply click HERE to complete the form, and CARS will reach out to you to arrange the pick-up of your vehicle donation, at no cost to you. You will make a difference in the lives of patients needing lifesaving blood and your generous gift could earn you a tax deduction.

We are thrilled to have Barona Resort & Casino behind our mission of saving lives in partnership with the community!
For 25 years, Barona Resort & Casino has invested over $250,000 to support our lifesaving blood collection program. Their recent gift of $10,000 will fund three HemoFlow 400XS devices—vital equipment that helps SDBB improve the collection efficiency of each blood donation with simplified processes and data management and increase plasma collection by up to 10% per blood donation.
We are grateful for Barona Resort & Casino lifesaving partnership! Thank you!
meet Team Survivor karina
Karina was suddenly diagnosed in August 2020 with a rare type of leukemia called Philadelphia Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (PH+ALL). She is in remission but continues treatment at Rady Children’s Hospital -San Diego that often requires platelet and blood transfusions. These lifesaving transfusions give Karina the strength to endure chemotherapy and more.
This summer and fall, a nationwide blood shortage has, at times, delayed her treatments. The blood shortage is a result of blood drive cancellations and Delta variant concerns, leading to the lowest blood supply in decades. Karina and her family are helping to change that by hosting blood drives and inspiring others to roll up their sleeves. Karina’s family is hosting their next blood drive on December 5 at La Costa Canyon High School from 9am to 4pm. Karina’s Krew will also be accepting donated toys for local nonprofits at the drive.
SDBB’s blood collection program relies on financial support in addition to volunteer blood donors to ensure blood is on the shelves when local patients need it most. You can support blood collections by making a financial gift and donating blood at a blood drive or one of 8 county locations this holiday season. You can donate blood in honor of Karina by registering with code KK21. Every contribution will help save the lives of local patients like Karina.

It's the season of giving and thousands of people in Southern California need donated blood each day to live longer, healthier and happier lives. The most difficult time to ensure a safe blood supply is the holiday season due to people travelling and schools being out of session. When you give blood, you’re saving the lives of people when our community needs it most. San Diego Blood Bank has many opportunities for people to be the gift to someone else this holiday season. Check our social media for updates and consider bringing together friends, family and coworkers for a special holiday give back time.
