September/October 2022 Philanthropy Update
Greetings from San Diego Blood Bank!
September is our birthday month and we have been celebrating by asking supporters to make a gift in honor of a blood recipient. The best gift a local blood recipient can receive is the chance to have more happy and healthy birthdays of their own. We invite you to celebrate SDBB’s mission of saving lives by making a financial donation in honor of a blood recipient today.
Making a gift also means helping to keep our fleet of bloodmobiles on the road every day collecting blood through our mobile our blood collection program. This year, we are raising funds to secure a new bloodmobile to replace an aging one near the end of its lifespan. Each bloodmobile collects an average of 35,000 units of blood each year for patients in need. We hope we can count on your support to help us reach our goal!
We are grateful for your continued financial partnership and hope you enjoy this newsletter. If you have any questions about SDBB or the impact of your gift, please contact me anytime.
With gratitude,
Cherryl Castro-Lector

celebrating 72 years of saving lives
Help Us Celebrate!
San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) is celebrating 72 years of saving lives in partnership with our community. Dedicated financial supporters like you have helped us save millions of lives.
The best gift a local blood recipient like Severina (Sevey, pictured above) can receive is the chance to have more happy and healthy birthdays of their own. We invite you to celebrate SDBB’s mission of saving lives by making a financial donation in honor a blood recipient during the month of September. Financial gifts support children like Sevey who has alpha thalassemia major, a severe, life-threatening form of anemia. Her life was saved by five intrauterine blood transfusions, and she will continue to need them every two weeks for the rest of her life.
Your financial donation will fund SDBB’s greatest needs, including blood collection supplies for local patients, and this year, a new bloodmobile. Bloodmobiles are in our community every day, collecting 40-50% of our blood supply, saving thousands of lives each year.
Support Team SDBB at the Pacific Beach Half Marathon and 5K
On Saturday, October 1st, 16 participants will be running or walking in the Pacific Beach Half Marathon and 5K race as part of Team SDBB. For the past three months these participants have been training and fundraising together to support SDBB’s Greatest Needs that includes a new bloodmobile. As a team they have collectively raised over $6,000 to support our mission of savings lives in our community! If you would like to contribute to their fundraising efforts, you can visit their team page here.
Team SDBB was launched in January 2022 to give the community new opportunities SDBB’s mission in a fun and unique way. Keep an eye out for the chance to be a part of Team SDBB for their next race this spring at the 2023 San Diego Half Marathon and 10k!
Meet Bryan
Bryan was hit by a truck while riding his bike to work, and during his long recovery, he required a large number of blood transfusions. Because of blood donors and philanthropy, he is now able to live his best life. Bryan is very thankful for the people who have helped him along the way. As an ambassador for SDBB and a member of Team Survivor, Bryan may be seen visiting our donor centers and events to thank blood donors and to encourage the community to get involved.

A New Bloodmobile for Our Blood Collection Program
Bloodmobiles are vital resources that help San Diego Blood Bank supply blood to those who need it most, like Juan (pictured right), who needed many blood transfusions as part of his treatment for leukemia.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month
When some people donate blood, they think of their donation helping an accident victim, or someone who needed blood for a surgery. While that may be true, the fact is many people in our community need blood on a regular basis to treat conditions like Sickle Cell disease.
Sickle Cell disease is a genetic condition that affects the body’s red blood cells. It can occur in any ethnic group, but affects African Americans at a much higher rate than people of other ethnicities – people like Brianna and Selina.
Brianna had multiple blood transfusions and may need more in the future. Selina continues to get monthly blood exchanges as part of her treatment.
“Selina’s blood transfusions and blood exchanges have helped her health in many ways by keeping her sickle cell levels down and reducing her pain levels so she has minor pain crisis in her body. My daughter Selina and I thank every [blood donor] from the bottom of our beating hearts for your selfless gift. It will go a long way as you have given Selina a lifeline, just at the right time.”
— Yolanda, Selina's Mother (pictured right with Selina)
Help us keep blood on the shelves for anyone who might need it, by making an appointment to donate blood today.
SDBB’s Visionary Circle provides steady support for blood collection
SDBB’s Visionary Circle is a monthly giving program that helps to provide steady funding for the critical blood collection resources needed to support the community. This includes blood bags, supplies for blood collections, and equipment such as Trima Systems that make blood collection safe and efficient. These resources helped SDBB collect and distribute over 227,000 units in 2021 to over 31 hospital partners and their patients.
By joining SDBB’s Visionary Circle, you can provide help for patients like Kamila, who was born with a genetic blood disorder called thalassemia that requires chronic lifelong blood transfusions. She received her first blood transfusion at two months of age and will continue to depend on them every three to four weeks for the rest of her life.
Special Thanks
We would like to thank Rest Haven Children’s Health Fund (RHCHF) for their recent grant award to purchase two new Trima Systems. Trimas play a vital role in safely collecting blood components for pediatric patients in need. Thank you, RHCHF, for your continued community partnership!
Rest Haven Children’s Health Fund is a nonprofit endowment fund that assists children in San Diego and Imperial counties with health-related needs.

meet mason
Mason is an accomplished kid. At 13, he’s already a seasoned public speaker, patient advocate, and an artist. Beyond that, Mason is a survivor. In 2020, Mason was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and received five blood transfusions in all during his stay in the hospital. Mason’s family is so thankful to the donors and the San Diego Blood Bank who helped save his life and they continue to encourage others to donate!
Over the summer, Mason took part in a class taught by Pixar artists where he learned to story board, and he made the video linked below. San Diego Blood Bank and our community of supporters are proud to be there for patients like Mason..
