August 2022 Philanthropy Update

Financial gifts support blood collection efforts through our Mobile Blood Collection program.

Greetings from San Diego Blood Bank!

I am happy to announce that I have stepped into the new role of Director of Development at San Diego Blood Bank. I will oversee the Development Department and all aspects of the organization’s fundraising efforts and initiatives. Prior to this role, I joined SDBB in 2019 as the Development Manager.

I will continue to manage the Leadership Circle giving program and look forward to meeting our other dedicated financial donors! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

SDBB is grateful to the blood donors who donated blood at Comic-Con’s 46th Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive. Their generosity enabled us to collect much-needed blood to help ensure a robust supply to our hospital partners. Thanks to Comic-Con for their long-standing partnership, to our community of blood and financial donors and to our dedicated staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to collect lifesaving blood.

As summer ends and we head into fall, we are focusing our efforts to fundraise for a new, eco-friendly bloodmobile to replace one nearing the end of its lifespan. SDBB bloodmobiles are in our community every day, collecting 40-50% of our blood supply, saving thousands of lives each year.

Our mission to provide a safe and robust blood supply to our community is made possible by your generosity. We are grateful for your continued financial partnership.

With gratitude,

SDBB in Action

Comic-Con International’s 46th Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive

Comic-Con International's 46th Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive was a great success, with superheroes from our community coming together to boost our local blood supply. Thanks to them, we collected more than 2,100 pints of blood—impacting thousands of lives.

We are truly thankful for our partnership with Comic-Con and to every donor who helped us collect and distribute a robust blood supply during the summer months when the blood supply is at a critical low due to factors like summer vacations.

In addition to our superhero blood donors, we want to thank our volunteers, street team members, lab techs, drivers, nurses, and SDBB staff who worked overtime to make the drive such a success. Patients are grateful!

join Team SDBB today and

support blood collection for our community

Team SDBB is two months out from the Pacific Beach Half Marathon and 5K on Saturday October 1st! We have a few spots left for the 5K race and only one spot left for the half marathon, so don’t wait to join us! The Pacific Beach Half Marathon and 5K is held along the beautiful coastline of Pacific Beach where you can enjoy a scenic waterfront course and the cool ocean breeze while running or walking your course. Don’t worry, 98% of the race course is on pavement and not on the sand!

As part of Team SDBB, you will be working together with the community to raise money for a new bloodmobile to replace one that will be nearing the end of its lifespan. SDBB’s fleet of 10 lifesaving vehicles are in the community every day collecting 40-50% of our annual blood collection, saving thousands of lives every year.

As a member of Team SDBB, you will receive free registration for your race, a team jersey, and exclusive perks with our wellness partners, Orange Theory Fitness and YogaSix. If you want to learn more about Team SDBB, or if you are interested in participating in the race, please contact Lauren Torres, Development Manager of Annual Giving, at ltorres@sdbb.org or (619) 400-8185.

Meet Team Survivors Cameron, kristopher and hunter

When Cameron, Kristopher, and Hunter were born prematurely at just 27 weeks, they needed to receive three blood transfusions. Parents Stephanie and Kris are deeply grateful to the donors who gave blood generously and saved the boys’ lives. The boys stayed in the hospital for three months before they could finally go home.

Special Thanks

We are thrilled to announce a $50,000 gift from the Cushman Foundation to support Campaign for Life. An outstanding community partner of 25 years, the Cushman Foundation gift will go toward the purchase of an essential bloodmobile that will serve the community for many years to come. Many thanks to the Cushman Foundation!

A New Bloodmobile for Our Blood Collection Program

Bloodmobiles are vital resources that help San Diego Blood Bank supply blood to those who need it most, like Selina (pictured right), who needs regular blood transfusions to treat sickle cell anemia.

Support our Campaign for Life as we raise funds for a bloodmobile to replace an aging one that has served our community for many years. SDBB’s Mobile Blood Collection Program relies on the use of 10 bloodmobiles that serve our community. On average, our fleet of lifesaving vehicles collects nearly 35,000 units of blood at over 1,600 community blood drives annually!
