June 2022 Philanthropy Update
Summer is here and San Diego Blood Bank is celebrating our most successful Padres Summer Blood Drive ever! Presented by Sycuan Casino Resort, this year’s drive collected 498 red blood cell units that will impact the lives of 1,488 patients in need. We are grateful to the volunteers, staff and generous blood donors who came out to Petco Park to help save lives!
We are also celebrating the opening of our new, permanent donation location in Chula Vista at Terra Nova Plaza. This location is expected to collect approximately 4,800 whole blood donations each year, saving up to 14,400 lives a year! Thank you to our financial donors who have helped ensure we have the necessary state-of-the-art equipment and supplies needed to serve the community.
World Blood Donor Day, observed on June 14 this year, was created to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products. June is also Men’s Health Month which aims to raise awareness about health issues affecting men and boys. See below for more information about both of these important observances.
Financial gifts from donors like you support SDBB’s blood collection and distribution of lifesaving blood products, helping to ensure a robust supply to our community. We are grateful for your continued partnership and commitment to our mission – Saving Lives Today, Improving Lives Tomorrow.
With gratitude,
Sherry Serio
Vice President of Development

meet Team Survivor selina
Selina Harris-Jordan was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia at two weeks old. This disorder led to a rare brain disease, as well as a stroke at 10-years-old. Selina gets monthly blood exchanges where they remove some of her sickle cell blood and give her blood from the San Diego Blood Bank at the same time. She’s also on medication as part of her treatment. Selina loves music, likes playing on the Wii U and loves spending time with her family.
Make A Lasting Impact
Are you wondering how you can have a lasting impact on the community with San Diego Blood Bank? SDBB’s Visionary Circle is a monthly giving program that helps to provide steady funding for the critical blood collection resources needed to support the community. This includes blood bags, supplies for blood colelctions, Trima Systems, HemoFlows, etc. These resources helped SDBB collect and distribute over 227,000 units in 2021 to our 31 hospital partners and their patients. By joining SDBB’s Visionary Circle, you could help patients like Daniela who is a blood recipient as she battles cancer.
“Though I can no longer personally donate blood, I have the unique opportunity to support SDBB as a Visionary Circle member through a monthly financial gift. I feel great knowing that my regular financial contribution will impact lives in the years to come through the mission of San Diego Blood Bank, and I am so very happy to support as a financial donor!”
Daniela Stout, Visionary Circle Member
Whether it is $50 a month or $10 a month, your gift matters and will impact lives all year long! If you are interested in learning more about SDBB’s Visionary Circle, contact Lauren Torres at LTorres@sdbb.org or 619-400-8185.
special thanks
San Diego Blood Bank is honored to receive a $36,000 grant from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors in support of two new Trima Accel® Automated Blood Collection Systems. The systems are utilized daily in each of SDBB’s nine donor centers and fleet of 10 bloodmobiles. A key part of our blood collection program, these apheresis machines give us the ability to draw out one specific component of whole blood while safely returning the remaining components to the blood donor. The result is less fluid loss and higher quantities of specific blood products collected for patients in need. We are thankful for the County’s continued community partnership!
Featured Funding Priority
Trima Accel® apheresis systems
New Trima Accel® apheresis systems are needed to support blood collections at our nine regional donation locations and in our bloodmobiles.
The Impact Of Trimas
Trima apheresis systems collect, spin, and separate whole blood into transfusable platelets, plasma, and red blood cells in real time.
This safe, closed-loop system, returns blood components that are not needed to the blood donor, resulting in less fluid loss and more specialized blood products for specific patient needs.
Trimas also support platelet collection needed for cancer patients, who may need up to seven or eight platelet transfusions per week during chemotherapy treatments. Because platelet units only have a five-day shelf life, the need for platelet donors is constant.

june 14 is world blood donor day
World Blood Donor Day was created to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusionn, highlight the critical contribution voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to national health systems and to support national blood transfusion services, blood donor organizations and other nongovernmental organizations in strengthening and expanding their voluntary blood donor programs by reinforcing national and local campaigns.
The day also provides an opportunity to call to action governments and national health authorities to provide adequate resources to increase the collection of blood from voluntary, unpaid blood donors and to manage access to blood and the transfusion of those who require it.
This year’s campaign aims to draw attention to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities.
The specific objectives of this year’s campaign are to:
thank blood donors in the world and create wider public awareness of the need for regular, unpaid blood donation;
highlight the need for committed, year-round blood donation to maintain adequate supplies and achieve universal and timely access to safe blood transfusion;
recognize and promote the values of voluntary unpaid blood donation in enhancing community solidarity and social cohesion;
raise awareness of the need for government investment to build a sustainable and resilient national blood system and increase collection from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors.

Health and Wellness
The month of June is all about the fellas because it’s the official Men’s Health Month. The month also coincides with Men’s Health Week (June 13-19), a special awareness period recognized by Congress each year, and the #ShowUsYourBlue Wear Blue campaign on June 17, where men and women are encouraged to Wear Blue on Friday to show their support for the health and well-being of boys and men.
The goal of Men’s Health Month is to educate the public about the many preventable health problems that affect men and boys, and empower them and their loved ones to move towards a healthier, happier life. Men die five years younger than women, on average, and die at higher rates for nine of the top ten causes of death. Men are the majority of workplace injuries, less likely to be insured, and far less likely to see a doctor for preventive care. All of this impacts their ability to be an involved father, supportive husband, and engaged member of their community.
