November/December 2020 Philanthropy Update
Dear Friend,
The mission of the San Diego Blood Bank is to save lives with quality blood services in partnership with the community. In this season of celebration and hope, the San Diego Blood Bank would like to thank the blood and financial donors who, for 70 years and counting, have provided the critical resources that give the gift of life for thousands of patients each year. We could not do it without you!
We are excited to announce that San Diego Self Storage and Anthony R. Carr, Managing Partner, have partnered with SDBB to match all gifts received by December 31, 2020, up to $70,000! This generous matching gift challenge will help fund two new bloodmobiles. Approximately 210,000 units of blood are collected over the 15-year lifespan of two bloodmobiles, impacting an estimated 630,000 people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. Your gift will be doubled, so please consider a year-end gift today!
Thank you for your commitment to San Diego Blood Bank, your support has meant so much to so many. As we celebrate this season of giving, everyone at the San Diego Blood Bank wishes you a healthy and joyous holiday season.
With gratitude,
David Wellis, Ph.D.

matching gift challenge through december 31st!
To celebrate San Diego Blood Bank’s 70th Anniversary, San Diego Self Storage is proud to partner with San Diego Blood Bank (SDBB) to match all gifts dollar-to-dollar up to $70,000, to complete funding for one new bloodmobile.
The Carr family, co-owners of San Diego Self Storage, became aware of the San Diego Blood Bank when they relocated back to San Diego in 1991. The family began making annual holiday donations to set a good example of community giving for the young children in the family. A recent news article caught the eye of Mr. Carr, who saw that the state was mandating the replacement of the Bloodmobiles and was struck by the high cost of replacing these life-saving mobile units.
San Diego Blood Bank debuted its first bloodmobile in 1974. Today, the bloodmobiles are custom designed with state-of-the-art equipment. Every day, SDBB improves the lives of patients in need by providing the gift of life through blood donations. The recipients of this blood are struggling with life-threatening medical conditions, including cancer and other blood disorders, severe burns, organ transplants, emergency surgery, trauma, childbirth complications and more.
San Diego Self Storage has served the San Diego community since 1972. Throughout the year, San Diego Self Storage gives back to the community through charitable giving such as the annual San Diego Food Bank Holiday Drive, Toys for Tots toy drive, and to a variety of other deserving local charities such as the San Diego Gulls Foundation, Connor’s Cause, The Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program, the San Diego Police Department's K-9 Unit and more. Every year each of the San Diego Self Storage facilities also contributes to an organization chosen by the staff to make a positive impact within the community that they serve.
To enable the San Diego Blood Bank to meet this end of year deadline for a new bloodmobile, and to support the essential work SDBB does in the community, San Diego Self Storage is proud to match all gifts dollar-to-dollar up to $70,000. The San Diego Self Storage family believes in the outstanding work the SDBB does for our local communities and beyond and hopes that you will consider this a time to make a gift so that the SDBB can continue to serve its mission of saving lives.
One bloodmobile can collect up to 7,000 units of blood per year, impacting up to 21,000 lives and over the 15-year lifespan of two bloodmobiles, approximately 210,000 units will be collected. Since one unit of blood can save up to three lives, an estimated 630,000 people of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds will be impacted.
This matching gift challenge is a great opportunity to show your support for SDBB and our mission to save lives with quality blood services in partnership with the community. We could not do it without you!
sdbb in action
San Diego Blood Bank saves lives every day in partnership with our community. Through Precision Blood, our research initiatives, the UC Health Milk Bank, and our All of Us Research program, SDBB is working to save lives every day.
Precision Blood™
SDBB will soon be partnering with local hospitals to match blood products more precisely through a target DNA sequencing-based genotype method called Precision Blood™ to improve patient outcomes and usher in a new standard of transfusion medicine.
Research Initiatives and COVID-19
SDBB has partnered with more than 100 researchers on projects related to cancer, regenerative medicine, and general health. This past year, SDBB has supported multiple partners in the fight against COVID-19. Our efforts to collect COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) not only supported local patients fighting the disease, tubes from part of the collection kit that would normally be discarded allowed partners such as Truvian Sciences to validate their FDA emergency use authorization (EAU) approved antibody test.
University of California Health Milk Bank
SDBB and University of California Health Milk Bank have partnered to deliver precious donor breastmilk to local hospitals for fragile infants in NICU’s SDBB will support the distribution to hospitals throughout California.
All of Us Research Program
SDBB was one of the first partners in the nation to help launch the All of Us Research Program. Supported by the National Institutes of Health, this program is a historic effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health.

team survivor: greg
Greg was born with an RH incompatibility. He received 9 blood transfusions during his treatment - breaking a record at that time. There were times that he stopped breathing, moments when his heart stopped, and at one point he was declared dead - but he survived because of those blood transfusions.
“My mother always told me, “you are here for a reason.” She told me that it was my responsibility to give back. The angels that donated blood literally saved my life - a gift that is not lost on me. I made a goal last year to donate one gallon of blood. This year, my goal is two. I will never know the people that saved me with their gift of life, but I will honor them by paying it forward.” - Greg
