January Philanthropy Update
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome to 2020! This year is an especially important year to us… 2020 marks San Diego Blood Bank’s 70th anniversary of saving lives in our community. Throughout the year, we will be sharing stories and celebrating in an exciting and compelling variety of ways. This January, we are also celebrating National Blood Donor Month!
As we reflect on our past 70 years, it’s clear we have a long history of embarking into new frontiers. Did you know that in the 1960s, San Diego Blood Bank pioneered the first tissue-typing laboratory in this region to support organ transplants? During that same time, we provided blood for the early development of open-heart surgery. Our commitment to pioneering the future of health continues today, through research and wellness initiatives.
Another constant is the role we play in connecting people to their profound ability to gift life. The generosity of blood and financial donors never ceases to amaze us. And the care that goes into ensuring a safe blood supply for our community is really something special. We remain firmly committed to our mission of saving lives today and improving life tomorrow. Thank you for being a part of our rich history … and our exciting future!
We are grateful for our financial donors who help fund lifesaving resources to ensure patients have the chance to live longer, healthier and more meaningful lives. Since January 2019, 465 financial donors have generously supported SDBB’s mission. Whether gifts fund SDBB’s greatest needs, such as Trima systems and bloodmobiles, or a SDBB lifesaving research program—every gift fuels life. In 2018 –2019, our financial donors funded resources for 60,063 individual blood donors to give the gift life.
Philanthropy is an investment in life – thank you for your partnership! Enjoy this month’s philanthropy update.
With gratitude,
David Wellis, Ph.D.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
In honor of National Blood Donor month, we are sharing how blood keeps us healthy, alive and thriving. We are thankful for our donors who selflessly give precious blood to patients in need.
What is blood made of?
Blood is a combination of plasma and cells that circulate through the entire body. It is a specialized bodily fluid that supplies essential substances around the body, such as sugars, oxygen, and hormones.
Red blood cells (RBCs), or erythrocytes: They are shaped like slightly indented, flattened disks and transport oxygen to and from the lungs. Hemoglobin is a protein that contains iron and retains the oxygen until its destination. The life span of an RBC is 4 months, and the body replaces them regularly. Amazingly, our body produces around 2 million blood cells every second.
The expected number of RBCs in a single drop, or microliter, of blood is 4.5 to 6.2 million in men and 4.0 to 5.2 million in women.
White blood cells, or leukocytes: White blood cells make up less than 1 percent of blood content, and they form vital defenses against disease and infection. The normal range of the number of white blood cells in a microliter of blood is between 3,700 and 10,500. Higher and lower levels of white blood cells can indicate disease.
Platelets, or thrombocytes: These interact with clotting proteins to prevent or stop bleeding. There should be between 150,000 and 400,000 platelets per microliter of blood.
RBCs, white blood cells, and platelets are produced in the bone marrow before entering the bloodstream. Plasma is mostly water that is absorbed from ingested food and drink by the intestines. Combined, these are propelled around the entire body by the heart and carried by the blood vessels.
What does blood do?
Blood has a number of functions that are central to survival, including:
supplying oxygen to cells and tissues
providing essential nutrients to cells, such as amino acids, fatty acids, and glucose
removing waste materials, such as carbon dioxide, urea, and lactic acid
protecting the body from infection and foreign bodies through the white blood cells
transporting hormones from one part of the body to another, transmitting messages, and completing important processes
regulating acidity (pH) levels and body temperature

FEATURED FUNDING PRIORITY
CAMPAIGN FOR LIFE
Invest in life and partner with SDBB by making an annual, monthly or one-time gift in support of the Campaign for Life.
The new bloodmobiles feature an improved design which creates a more comfortable donor experience and will play a vital role in ensuring the health of our community for years to come.
Bloodmobiles are critical to maintaining the supply of blood needed for local patients and can impact up to 21,000 lives each year. Your generous gift will support our fundraising goal of $1,350,000 and fuel the design, construction and purchase of three new bloodmobiles.
CAMPAIGN FOR LIFE – FUNDRAISING UPDATE
SDBB and millions around the globe celebrated an international day of giving on December 3, 2019.
#GIVINGTUESDAY 2019 officially launched SDBB’s Campaign for Life!
BLOODMOBILES
We are excited to announce that 95 blood and financial donors collectively gave $11,387 on Giving Tuesday in support of Campaign for Life. And since November 2019, we have raised more than $384,000 towards our overall goal of $1,350,000 from more than 300 financial donors. Gifts will help fund three new bloodmobiles that will each impact up to 21,000 patient lives in one year and collectively up to 900,000 lives over the course of their lifespan. Thank you!
Trima Accel® Automated Blood Collection Systems (Trima systems)
To date, 283 financial donors, corporations and partners have cumulatively donated $324,000 to purchase and replace 9 new Trima systems. Our campaign continues with a $180,000 fundraising balance to purchase the remaining 6 new Trima systems by March 2020.
These vital apheresis systems separate whole blood into platelets, plasma and red blood cells – enabling blood donors to donate the exact blood component needed to meet the current blood supply need for patients. Help fund critical resources for SDBB with a financial gift!
