October Philanthropy Update

FALL INTO OCTOBER

Fall is here! This October, we embrace Breast Cancer Awareness Month and continue to champion the health and wellness of our community.

Philanthropy is at the heart of SDBB’s mission. Together, we impact the thousands of patient lives saved each year by blood transfusions.

We value your generous support and partnership – thank you! Enjoy October’s philanthropy update.

TEAM SURVIVOR

Two weeks after her son, Trevor, was confirmed to be cured of aplastic anemia, Dawn Norby discovered a lump in her right breast. Two days later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After chemotherapy treatment, her vital numbers dropped so low, Dawn needed blood transfusions to stabilize her. After 16 weeks of chemo, 38 straight days of radiation and a couple of blood transfusions, she is now cancer-free! Without the help of strangers donating blood, Dawn and Trevor would have had a much different outcome.

PARTNERS IN PRECISION HEALTH

celebrating 200,000 ALL of us research program PARTICIPANTS!

The All of Us Research Program is a historic effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health. By taking into account individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology, researchers will uncover paths toward delivering precision medicine.

We are happy to announce the program has officially enrolled and secured 200,000 participants of 1,000,000! That is a monumental accomplishment for a national research program and SDBB is honored to play an important part of recruiting participants in this ground-breaking research collaboration to advance precision medicine.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

SDBB cares about the health of our community. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women after skin cancer. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.

The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

  • If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.

  • If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may also choose to get them more often.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

Plateletpheresis donor, Jose (pictured) says he is proudly donating platelets because, "I personally know cancer patients and people that have been in motorcycle accidents and I know how important it is to donate. I want to show my kids that it’s easy to give back to your community. Sure, you can go pick up trash on the beach, but this has an immediate impact on people’s lives.”

His selfless gift saved the lives of cancer patients in need in the five days following donation.

Trima systems enable platelet donors like Jose to give the gift of life. Thank you to our generous platelet donors and financial donors for supporting SDBB’s mission so we can continue to provide lifesaving blood products to our community.

Make your appointment to donate platelets or call (619) 400-8251 to learn more.
