Women’s Health Week 2019 - May 12 - 18

During National Women's Health Week each year, millions of women take steps to improve their health. The week serves as a reminder for women to make their health a priority and build positive health habits for life. The 20th annual National Women's Health Week kicks off on Mother's Day, May 12, and is celebrated through May 18, 2019. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women’s Health leads National Women’s Health Week to encourage all women to be as healthy as possible.

steps toward a safer, healthier life

  • Get recommended screenings and preventative care

Protect your health by getting the care you need to prevent disease, disability, and injuries.

  • Get moving

Get out and about and enjoy the spring and summer weather. Physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health and has many benefits, including lowering your risk for heart disease—the leading cause of death for women.

  • Enjoy a healthy and balanced diet

healthy eating plan includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat free and low-fat milk and other dairy products, lean meats, and is low in salt, saturated and trans fats, and added sugars.

  • Prioritize mental health

Keep your mind and body healthy. Research shows that positive mental health is associated with improved health.

  • Practice healthy behaviors

Getting enough sleep is important for overall health. It impacts how you feel and perform during the day. Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

CORD BLOOD BANKING

San Diego Blood Bank is a primary cord blood provider! We collaborate with San Diego and Southern California hospitals to collect umbilical cord blood and cord tissue after the birth of a healthy full-term baby.

The cord blood is processed and stored at San Diego Blood Bank and is donated anonymously for the use of any patient in need of a lifesaving bone marrow transplant. Each certified cord blood unit is listed on the Be the Match Registry®, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) which makes stem cells available to patients around the world for a match.

If a mother-to-be or a family is interested in donating cord blood, visit our website which has instructions for how you can donate.

A gift of $50 funds critical supplies for one cord blood collection kit for a new mother.

CORD TISSUE BANKING

SDBB is pioneering an umbilical cord tissue bank — a breakthrough for the aging population.

Umbilical cord tissue is abundant in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which researchers have discovered can play a critical role in not only maintaining health but also in regenerating diseased or damaged organ tissue.

Currently, umbilical cord tissue is discarded as medical waste.

By collecting instead of disposing of cord tissue, the rich supply of young functional stem cells that help the body heal itself can be studied and developed into possible therapies and cures for various diseases.

The supply of MSCs from San Diego Blood Bank’s public cord tissue bank will support research and clinical trials.

In collaboration with academic, biopharmaceutical and clinical research and development organizations, the establishment of San Diego Blood Bank’s cord tissue bank will enable research and development of new cell therapies in regenerative medicine for age-related disorders.

SDbb / Ucsd’s mothers’ milk bank

Our partnership with UCSD's Mothers' Milk Bank has collected 11,165 ounces of lifesaving mother’s milk for babies in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in San Diego.

San Diego Mothers' Milk Bank plans to improve breast-milk donation and to ensure that all premature or ill babies in San Diego County and Imperial Valley have access to donor milk.

Milk can be donated at San Diego Blood Bank and is processed fully and distributed to the local community.

Learn more about donating mother’s milk.

While breast milk provides the most vulnerable babies with critical nutrition that they need, many community hospitals find offering access to donor milk a challenge, our goal is to focus on educating the community on the importance of breastfeeding in general, and to introduce the concept of milk donation if a mother has an excess supply. Additionally, we hope to assist and encourage more area hospitals to use human breast milk as part of their care.

save lives today

SDBB’s campaign is underway to raise $504,000 to purchase 14 new Trima apheresis machines by December 2019.

These vital machines perform apheresis, which is the process of separating whole blood into platelets, plasma, and red blood cells.

Trimas enable blood donors like Samantha to donate platelets for cancer patients who need frequent transfusions.

You can make a difference by making a financial gift in support of Campaign for Life.

Help us reach our goal and impact thousands of lives.
