HAPPY SUMMER!

Summer is in full swing!

We are happy to announce that our Padres Summer Blood Drive collected more than 500 units of blood impacting over 1,500 lives - a 45% increase in blood donations over last year’s drive! It was a great day at Petco Park.

Our next signature blood drive is the 43rd Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive at Comic-Con July 17-21. We look forward to welcoming blood donors (and heroes) in their festive costumes. San Diego Blood Bank would like to thank Mad Engine for their generous contribution of SDBB’s Comic-Con t-shirts that will be given to blood donors at this year’s drive.

Our mission is supported by those who give. Thank you for continuing to support SDBB Foundation and enjoy this month’s philanthropy update!

Thank you to the San Diego Padres for hosting the 3rd Annual Padres Summer Blood Drive.

The San Diego Padres stepped up to the plate to help ensure an adequate blood supply for patients in our local hospitals - at a time when it’s most needed.

The Padres Summer Blood Drive, presented by Sycuan Casino Resort, was an opportunity for donors to save lives, meet players and alumni, and enjoy appearances by the Pad Squad and Swingin’ Friar. Thank you to Sycuan Casino Resort for your long-time partnership and commitment to community wellness.

Donors received VIP access to the autograph line and a voucher for two tickets to the Padres home game against the Baltimore Orioles on July 29 or July 30.

A big thank you to San Diego County Credit Union who hosted a cash grab and two drawings to win $500 and fun swag like bags and sunglasses in SDCCU’s signature teal.

Team Survivor Story

Meet TREVOR

Trevor Colbert is a member of Team Survivor and often attends events and tours to share his story about how blood donations have impacted his life. He was born with a complex heart defect and has undergone three open-heart surgeries which required multiple transfusions.

Trevor and his family stopped by this year’s Padres Summer Blood Drive to enjoy the day at Petco Park and to thank donors for their blood donation to give the gift of life.

Because of blood donors and philanthropy, Trevor was able to receive lifesaving blood transfusions when he needed it most. Thank you to Trevor and his family for coming out to the Padres Blood Drive to not only thank blood donors but to show how SDBB impacts the lives in our community.

SUMMER WELLNESS

10 ways to have your healthiest summer yet

Stay happy and healthy this season!

It’s time to whip out the BBQs, dig out that swimwear and jet off for some well-deserved chill time on the beach. But for many of us, summer also brings with it temptations of excessive sun exposure, sweet treats (hello ice cream!), and other health woes – so it is just as important to look after ourselves in the warmer weather. Here are top ten tips for staying happy and healthy this summer.

Wear your SPF!

It is important to use a sun lotion of at least SPF 30 – even better, 50 - in order to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. For sensitive skin, a mineral-based sunscreen is best. Try not to sit in the sun in peak hours between 10am and 4pm in order to minimize UV radiation, but if you are planning to be out in the sun for a long period of time, reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming.

Drink plenty of water

During the hot summer months, heat and sweat can leave your body dehydrated. A lack of water is harmful to your body and can also make you crave food when you're not actually hungry. It is important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight to nine glasses of water a day. Try adding some slices of cucumber or lemon to add a fresh flavor.

Beware of ‘healthy’ smoothies

Fruit smoothies are a great way to get keep refreshed throughout the summer, but watch out for smoothies made with frozen yogurts, ice cream or too much fruit, as they're loaded with hidden calories! A better option is a green smoothie, made with both fruit and veggies – still sweet and delicious, but much lower in sugar.

Exfoliate

Summer means an increase of dead skin cells, so it is important to exfoliate your skin to keep it smooth and silky. You don’t need to buy expensive products to achieve your summer glow; simply use a loafer for a light scrub or make your own exfoliation lotion using a handful of oatmeal, milk and yogurt.

Tackle hay fever

Summer can be unbearable at times for hay fever sufferers. Make sure you vacuum and clean your home regularly to get rid of excess pollen and try to shower and change clothes after you've been outside. Watery eyes? Sunglasses are your friend!

Keep up the exercise regime

Before you hide those running shoes in the wardrobe, remember summer exercise doesn’t have to stop because of the rising temperatures. On very hot days, change your exercise plan and take it indoors. Take a class or an online workout. It's best not to work out in the blazing sunshine, but on a cooler day there's nothing to stop you heading out for a run or bike ride – take plenty of water and wear SPF.

Get swimming!

Start by swimming for 10 minutes and increase the time over the following weeks by doing front crawl, breaststroke or backstroke to mix up your cardio workout. A 30-minute session will burn almost 400 calories! If swimming laps isn’t your thing, you could try a water aerobics class.

Protect your hair

Constant heat, sun damage and chlorine takes a toll on our hair and can leave it feeling limp and dull after the holidays. Try a clarifying shampoo to remove the chlorine and any excess product or sun cream, before using a conditioning treatment to add moisture back in. If you can, avoid heat styling.

Eat well by the pool

When the sun is beating down, the idea of seeking out the nearest ice cream stand is seriously tempting. There's nothing wrong with a treat in the heat but coming prepared with a healthy lunch will mean you get the nutrition you need. Fill your cool box with bottled water, sandwiches, vegetable sticks, hummus and salads.

Take up a new hobby

Summer is the perfect time to take up a new activity.

  • Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and will help you burn calories!

  • Not your thing? Take inspiration from Wimbledon and try your hand at some tennis.
